The Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES), as authorized by Part 97.407 of the FCC Rules and Regulations. Its mission is to operate and maintain amateur, public safety, and other communication systems, and to perform unique, accurate, and efficient communication services to assist government officials in the protection of life and property.
The Township of Mahwah has a RACES group that operates under the direction of the Office of Emergency Management. It consists of licensed Amateur Radio Operators who volunteer their skills and time to set up organized non-commercial communication networks. They use "ham" radio equipment on authorized amateur radio frequencies. Facilities are provided at the Township's EOC. They also have use of a mobile command center and use many base stations and handheld radios on a multitude of authorized frequencies.
