Mahwah’s Annual Fishing Derby – Saturday, May 27th 

Mahwah Recreation is happy to present the 33rd Annual Fishing Derby!  The derby will be held on Saturday, May 27 at 10am.  This family favorite is held at Silver Creek Pond, located at the intersection of Airmont Ave, and Airmount Road.  The contest is open to residents and proof of residency will be required at registration.    Bring your own fishing poles… catch and release only!  Prizes will be awarded to contestants ages 5 through 13 based on size and the number of fish caught. KIDS ONLY!!   Trouts Unlimited volunteers will be there to help us to measure each fish that is caught!  We promise… it will be a reel good time for the whole family!    The Fishing Derby is Rain or Shine.  



The annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony will be held on Monday, May 29, 2023.  The parade begins at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Island Road, followed by the ceremony held at Veterans Memorial Park, at the corner of Franklin Tpk. and East Ramapo Ave.  The ceremony will be both live at the park and broadcast on Zoom, FIOS, Optimum and MCN.   Come out and line the streets to cheer on our Veterans, Township leaders, youth sports teams, All-Stars, Boys/Girls Scouts, MHS Marching Band, MHS Concert Choir, Police, Fire, EMS and all of the parade participants.  Hope to see you all on Monday morning!

The mission of the Mahwah Township RecreationTownship of Mahwah Bergen County Department is to coordinate the recreational activities within the township. In cooperation with the Recreation Committee, the Mahwah Youth Sports Boosters, the Mahwah Board of Education, and the Mahwah Department of Public Works, the Recreation Department oversees the efficient and safe use of public areas that are maintained for purpose of:

  • Community events
  • Passive recreation
  • Picnic areas
  • Playgrounds
  • Walking paths
  • Youth, high school, and adult sports

Recreation Director

The Recreation Director develops the schedule for recreational and sporting events on township owned facilities and fields. The priority use of fields is scheduled by the Recreation Director. View a copy of the Recreation Department Handbook (PDF).

Sports Boosters

The Recreation Director does not organize youth sports teams. The Township of Mahwah Youth Sports Boosters handles registration, team/coach assignments and game/practice schedules. If you are interested in becoming a coach or assistant coach for the youth program, you must take the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. class and go through a background check prior to the season starting.
