Administration

Construction Office (Department of Inspections)

Department of Public Works (DPW)
The Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining township roads, government buildings and grounds, Recreation, recycling, and water and sewer utilities.

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is responsible for developing and maintaining current state-approved emergency operations plans.

The Division of Finance within the Office of Administration is responsible for the management of the Township fiscal affairs.

Fire Prevention
The Department of Fire Prevention is a multi-task department serving the Township of Mahwah. In addition to conducting fire code inspections at commercial locations, Fire Prevention also provides public fire safety education programs.

Health Department
The Health Department assures that state and local health standards are maintained by food handling establishments within the Township. It also administers a comprehensive program of sanitation, communicable disease control, public health nursing, health education and vital statistics.

Municipal Court
The Municipal Court office provides information on filing a citizen's complaint, including simple assault, bad check, theft, and harassment. The Court has jurisdiction over traffic matters (Title 39 Statutes), criminal matters (disorderly or petty disorderly offenses), and Township ordinances (e.g, Health violations, Planning and Zoning violations, and water ban restrictions). Indictable matters are heard at the County level, where jurisdiction over these cases is granted.

Planning, Zoning & Property Maintenance
The Department of Planning and Zoning consists of the Administrative Officer, Board of Adjustment, Escrow, Planning Board, Soil Movement Permit Applications, Zoning Permit Applications and Property Maintenance / Tree Removal Permits.

Recreation
The mission of the Mahwah Township Recreation Department is to coordinate the recreational activities within the township. In cooperation with the Recreation Committee, the Mahwah Youth Sports Boosters, the Mahwah Board of Education, and the Mahwah Department of Public Works, the Recreation Department oversees the efficient and safe use of public areas that are maintained for purpose of community events; youth, high school, and adult sports; passive recreation; picnic areas; playgrounds; and walking paths.

Tax Assessor
The Tax Assessor's Office is responsible for the assessment of all real property within the taxing district, and for the processing of deeds, sub-divisions, reviewing all building permits to determine additional value, and keeping up with map changes.

The Tax Collector is responsible for the yearly billing and quarterly collection of the tax levy within guidelines mandated by the State of New Jersey.
