As you may be aware, the Township’s Water Department
sent a required notification that one of our wells has a level of Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid (PFOS) above a drinking water standard set by the State of New Jersey. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) is a member of the group of chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), that are man-made and used in industrial and commercial applications.
While this sounds alarming, it is important to note that per the DEP – this is not an acute contaminant and this is NOT a do not drink order. Furthermore, the DEP has also not asked the Township to take the well offline. The State of NJ has set their advisory limit at 13 parts per trillion (ppt). This well’s annual average was 16ppt. A difference of .003 microns per liter. As a matter of scale – that is the equivalent of a single drop of water in 20 Olympic sized pools. With that said, please be assured we take this very seriously and that the Township will be taking steps to ensure the well is returned to compliance – unfortunately due to material lead times, that project could take up to 18 months to complete.
We will be hosting a town wide zoom meeting next Monday, January 31st at 7pm for anyone who wishes to receive more information and to better understand both the current situation and how we plan on fixing the issue. The details of that meeting will be sent out in the coming days. It will also be available on the MCN network and a video will be available online after the meeting for those who cannot attend.
In the meantime, those wishing to do so, can utilize water filters to reduce the amount of PFOS by up to 50%, as indicated on the
NJ.gov website below:
We will be hosting a Virtual Town Hall Meeting regarding this issue on Monday, January 31st at 7pm.
